- PUFF is jewelry with a computer inside — treat it like you'd treat a watch that isn't water resistant. A little weather is fine; don't swim or shower with it.
- No — PUFF runs on power from whatever it's plugged into, so there's nothing to charge. The screen is dark while it's off your computer, and comes alive the moment you plug it in.
- Yes. PUFF comes on a box chain necklace, but it'll hang just as happily from a keyring, a carabiner, or whatever chain you already wear.
- While PUFF is plugged in and running, hold the button for about a second — it cycles to the next saved animation slot.
- Hold the button while plugging in, for about a second, to put PUFF into connect mode. Then open puff.noware.nyc, connect your device when prompted, and sync an animation to one of your slots. Unplug, plug back in normally, and it's live on the screen. Note that Puff Studio only works in Chrome or another Chromium-based browser — Edge, Arc, and Brave are all fine, but Safari and Firefox can't talk to the device.
- Yes — as a drive it works anywhere a USB flash drive works, including Linux. Puff Studio (for animations and updates) runs in a Chromium browser on any desktop OS.
- No. Your files live on separate storage from your animations and firmware — uploading, syncing, and updating don't touch them. As with any drive, keep a backup of anything you'd hate to lose.
Most people never need to. Updates are optional — they add new animation features and fixes, and PUFF works fine without them. When you do want one, it takes about a minute:
- Hold the button while plugging in and keep holding for about five seconds — longer than connect mode — to enter update mode.
- Open the firmware page in Puff Studio and connect your device.
- Click install and leave PUFF plugged in until the screen comes back.
- Make sure you plugged in without touching the button — holding it puts PUFF into connect mode instead. Unplug, wait a couple seconds, and plug back in. If you're using a hub or extension cable, try a port directly on your computer.
- Unplug and replug — PUFF has no battery, so this is a full restart. If the screen stays blank across a couple of ports and cables, email us and we'll get you sorted.
- Puff Studio talks to PUFF through the browser, which currently means a Chromium browser — Chrome, Edge, or Arc. Safari and Firefox won't see the device. Also double-check you're in connect mode: hold the button while plugging in, about a second, until the screen changes.
- No. If an update doesn't take, PUFF falls back to a recovery screen instead of running broken firmware. Enter update mode again (hold the button while plugging in, about five seconds) and re-run the update from Puff Studio.
