Getting Started

Plug PUFF into any USB port and it shows up as a regular flash drive — drag files on and off like you always have. While it's plugged in, the hidden screen comes alive and plays your animations.

One Button, Three Modes

Everything on PUFF is controlled by the single button, and the mode is chosen at the moment you plug in:

Drive mode — plug in without touching the button. PUFF is a flash drive and the screen plays your animations.
Studio mode — hold the button while plugging in, for about a second. PUFF connects to Puff Studio instead of mounting as a drive, so you can design and sync animations.
Update mode — hold the button while plugging in and keep holding for about five seconds. PUFF waits for a firmware update from Puff Studio.

One more trick: in drive mode, hold the button for about a second to cycle to your next saved animation.

Designing in Puff Studio

Puff Studio is where you design what plays on your screen — no app to install, it runs in the browser (Chrome, Edge, or Arc).

Hold the button while plugging PUFF in (about a second) to enter Studio mode.
Open puff.noware.nyc and connect your device when prompted.
Design an animation — or grab one from the community — and sync it to one of your PUFF's slots.
Unplug, replug normally, and it's live on your screen.

Updating Firmware

We ship regular updates with new animation features and fixes. Updates take about a minute:

Hold the button while plugging PUFF in, and keep holding for about five seconds to enter update mode.
Open the firmware page in Puff Studio and connect your device.
Click install and keep PUFF plugged in until the screen comes back.

FAQs

My computer doesn't see the drive.
Make sure you plugged in without touching the button — holding it puts PUFF into a different mode. Unplug, wait a couple seconds, and plug back in. If you're using a hub or extension cable, try a port directly on your computer.
Puff Studio can't connect to my PUFF.
Puff Studio talks to PUFF over the browser, which currently means a Chromium browser — Chrome, Edge, or Arc. Safari and Firefox won't see the device. Also double-check you entered Studio mode: hold the button while plugging in, about a second, until the screen changes.
The screen is blank or frozen.
Unplug and replug — PUFF has no battery, so this is a full restart. If the screen stays blank across a couple of ports and cables, text us and we'll get you sorted.
A firmware update failed. Is my PUFF bricked?
No. If an update doesn't take, PUFF falls back to a recovery screen instead of running broken firmware. Enter update mode again (hold the button while plugging in, about five seconds) and re-run the update from Puff Studio.
Will designing animations or updating firmware erase my files?
No. Your files live on separate storage from your animations and firmware — designing, syncing, and updating don't touch them. As with any drive, keep a backup of anything you'd hate to lose.
Does PUFF work on Mac and Windows?
Yes — as a drive it works anywhere a USB flash drive works, including Linux. Puff Studio (for designing and updates) runs in a Chromium browser on any desktop OS.
How do I switch between the animations saved on my PUFF?
While PUFF is plugged in and running, hold the button for about a second — it cycles to the next saved animation slot.
Can I wear it in the rain?
PUFF is jewelry with a computer inside — treat it like you'd treat a watch that isn't water resistant. A little weather is fine; don't swim or shower with it.
